Fiber Network Planner/Capacity Engineer

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Capacity planning and forecasting: Analyze network traffic patterns, historical usage, and business growth projections to predict future capacity needs. This includes developing both short-term and long-term (e.g., 5-year) capacity plans.
  • Performance monitoring: Continuously monitor the performance and utilization of network infrastructure, such as core networks, radio access networks (RAN), and transmission links.
  • Network optimization: Identify and resolve network bottlenecks and resource shortages to improve overall efficiency. This may involve recommending configuration changes, hardware upgrades, or new network designs.
  • Resource management: Track and manage network assets and leased capacity, including fiber infrastructure and equipment inventory.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including network operations, sales, product management, and finance, to gather requirements and communicate network capabilities.
  • Reporting: Create and present regular reports and dashboards detailing network utilization, performance metrics, and capacity projections to stakeholders and management.
  • Solution design: Evaluate and design network architecture solutions, including new tower deployments or upgrades, to support growing demand and emerging technologies like 5G.

Required Qualifications

  • Technical expertise: Deep knowledge of network architecture and protocols, including cellular technologies (2G/3G/4G/5G), IP, and optical networking.
  • Analytical skills: Strong ability to analyze complex data, create traffic models, and perform feasibility studies.
  • Tool proficiency: Experience with network monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds), capacity planning software (e.g., Atoll, Planet), and data analysis applications.
  • Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication to explain complex technical concepts and present findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Problem-solving: Ability to proactively identify issues, troubleshoot problems, and recommend solutions to prevent service-affecting issues.
  • Educational background: A bachelor’s degree in a technology field, such as electrical engineering or computer science, is typically required.
